Jacquard Francais
Jacquard was the son of a weaver from Lyon. Throughout his life he tried to make the task of silk-workers easier.
In 1790 he invented his first machine based on a principle developed by Vaucanson (1709-1782). He perfected it in 1801. His idea was a machine placed at the top of the loom which allowed automatic reproduction of the designs. He drew the idea from an early punch card system. The design was transposed on to a card in the form of perforations - it was early computer technology! The machine's up-and-down movements produced the relief on the fabric resulting in Jacquards unique feature and qaulity. More...
